When I was 20 years old, I was serving a mission for the LDS church in Puerto Rico. One day, we were riding our bikes on the side of the road, going to an appointment to teach investigators about the church. As we were going down the road, I was riding my bike in front of my companion, and a car rapidly made its way off the road and hit me, throwing me into a telephone pole.
I had to have an emergency appendectomy, and it was my first surgery. I was in the hospital overnight and surgery was next morning.
I had only been married for a few years. We had one beautiful 16-month-old daughter and I was 32 weeks pregnant with our second daughter. It was already a rough marriage. Doing ministry kept us very busy and everyone had an opinion on how we ought to live. No one knew the unrest behind the scenes.
It started with what felt like a bomb going off in my abdomen.
My sister, Kate, had been living with cancer for 10 years prior to this experience. Mid-December 2022, she came to my home on Hospice Care. There were three connected experiences that happened in the time period from 16 December 2022 to 25 January 2023 when Kate left this world.
As I went to the nurse’s station, I watched them gathered together for their daily meeting. They were discussing the cases of patients on the ward and planning the day ahead. I rushed up to them and interrupted the meeting. ‘Please, I need to talk to you, it’s urgent.’ ‘What’s up, Susie?’, said my favourite nurse.
