I was on a rafting trip with friends when we came upon heavy rapids. We tried to avoid them, but were sucked into the whirlpool. My raft capsized and I was sucked under the water for about 20 seconds, the first time. I popped out and was then pulled down again for about 30 seconds. I started to panic, fearing death by drowning. I popped out again and was thrown against a rock only to be pulled down again.
In October of 2000, I had a car accident. My vehicle left the roadway on a country road and hit a telephone pole. My injuries resulted in a punctured lung and various broken bones. My head shattered the windshield. The motor was pushed into the car almost touching the seats. People find it hard to believe that anybody came away alive from it. I was the sole occupant. I have no memory of the accident whatsoever except for a glimpse of driving through a town before getting on the rural roads. That was probably about 15 minutes or so before the accident. I have no visual memory but I do remember my mind shouting; "I'm going to die!"
A severe head-on collision took three lives. I was in the front passenger's seat asleep but awoke to our vehicle lunging out of its lane. I watched the driver, a dear friend of mine for 25 years, frantically attempt to recover the vehicle amid utter shock from the lunge. Headlights wrapped around a corner at speed to face us. With an engineering background, it was clear to me that there would be four bodies in the end.
I was driving home one night in March 2000. The last thing I remember is waving goodbye to a friend, as I was driving away. Then I was in total darkness. No fear, no pain...just nothingness. It felt embracing and calm. I have never felt such a sense of peace almost euphoria. I could feel myself sinking deeper and deeper into the blackness. I was more than happy to go with it. I was aware of the intensity of the feeling and was allowing myself to sink, deeper and deeper until I realised what was happening.
On the afternoon of January 10th I began to feel kind of funky, like maybe I had eaten something bad. I went home that night and went straight to bed. Thursday, I went to work and by the afternoon I had a stomach ache and thought I was coming down with a virus. I went home that night and straight to bed again. About 12:30 a.m. I awoke with a strong pain in my gut like someone had stabbed me; it would not go away. I tried to call someone I knew and all I got was an answering machine. I waited (in pain) until I finally reached my neighbor at about 7 a.m. I had her take me to the nearest urgent care place hoping that if it was serious enough to go the the ER that I could bypass the wait from a doctor's referral.
