Interviews with 81 earthquake survivors from the Chinese province of Tangshan provide a remarkably peaceful report of experiences while these people were near to death. Many of the survivors discuss seeing and speaking with deceased relatives and family members. A number of them report being pulled through a tunnel and seeing a bright light.
Though the earthquake occurred in 1976, before the descriptions of near-death experiences had reached the popular media, many of the reports echo the findings of current research in the field of near death studies. The survivors report happy and calm experiences that they remember clearly even after more than a decade had passed.
