Abstract: The results of a questionnaire distributed to 2,722 clergy from Pennsylvania and Illinois (320 usable questionnaires returned) showed the respondents had limited knowledge of the near-death experience (NDE) but had a moderately positive attitude toward the subject. Using Nina Thornburg’s (1988) Near-Death Phenomena Knowledge and Attitudes Questionnaire, respondents’ mean score for knowledge questions was 7.8 out of 18, and mean score for attitudes questions was 49 out of 85. Approximately 98% of the clergy had heard of NDEs; 85% of the clergy had counseled parishioners who had had NDEs; nearly 40% had had personal contact with an experiencer; and 10% reported having had NDEs themselves. Respondents were most familiar with the near-death element of “peace,” and with experiencers’ greater appreciation for life and belief in an afterlife.

Serdahely, W. J. (1992). Loving help from the other side: A mosaic of some near-death, and near-death-like, experiences. Journal of Near-Death Studies, 10(3) 171-182.

Abstract: Persons who have Stage 5 or Transcendental near-death experiences frequently report they were given a message that they should be more loving and helpful to others upon returning to their bodies. On the other hand, some persons who have had near-death, or near-death-like, experiences report receiving loving help from “the other side.” I propose that these reports are evidence that the other side “practices what it preaches.”

Cook, R. B. (1992). The resurrection as near-death experience. Journal of Near-Death Studies, 10(4) 193-204.

Abstract: I suggest in this paper that Jesus Christ was not clinically dead, but in a deep coma when he was taken down from the cross. He was revived by Joseph of Arimathea, who was permitted to take Jesus’s body into his care. By Pentecost, seven weeks later, Jesus had finally recovered from his wounds, and his reappearance convinced his followers that he was the Son of God. I suggest that the Resurrection was not a physical happening, but a near-death experience. As such, it was totally real to Christ himself, and it also confirmed his belief that he could, by proxy discharge humanity’s sins.

Arnette, J. K. (1992). On the mind/body problem: The theory of essence. Journal of Near-Death Studies, 11(1) 5-18.

Abstract: The classical mind/body problem can be approached empirically, using instances of the near-death experience (NDE) as experimental data. The monistic viewpoint, that the mind is the functioning of the brain, finds little support in the NDE data, while dualism, mind and body as separate entities, is consistent with NDE research to date. Comparison of the details of the NDE with predictions from theoretical cosmology shows strong similarities between the two and further strengthens the case for dualism. A theory of human nature is proposed that incorporates these similarities.

Lundahl, C. R. (1992). Angels in near-death experiences. Journal of Near-Death Studies, 11(1) 49-56.

Abstract: The literature on near-death experiences (NDEs) contains no substantive discussion of angels in NDEs, even though there are references to angels in several studies of these experiences. In this article I identify angels in NDEs and describe their functions in the NDE based on published NDE accounts. I conclude that angels are personages with whom the NDEr does not usually recall having previous acquaintance. Angels serve as guides, messengers, or escorts in the NDE.
